People of African ancestry from the Americas and from Africa made up a quarter of foreign settlers to Hawaii in the 1800s. They were sailors, doctors, business owners, attorneys, educators, missionaries, and more. After the end of the Civil War, more African Americans arrived to the islands. The sweet potato pie is a distinctly African American contribution to the table.
